Buthnath & Prem Baba
Buthnath & Prem Baba
Nighttime in Haidakhan, Kali Dhuni.
The night was black and the river was roaring. There was a fire in the kali dhuni. Try and imagine this: a pitch black river valley with white stones and then the appearance of a chocolate brown man with a red langurti (like a tanga slip) and a white beard, a big stick and a white dog who announces himself with a very special voice: Prem Baba
He sat down at the havan and spoke in Hindi, which I don’t understand. From behind one could hear the rhythmic sound of bells coming closer and closer, Buthnath, the King of ghosts, the Saddhu from Sri Munirajji's shop.
Some days before Buthnath arrived in His Lady cloth. He carried very big Trishul made from simple steel, very very long and probably very very heavy. He came through the riverbed and accompanied by a little man with a blanket on his head. It was a wonderful picture.
Buthnath arrived also with loud voice praising the Gods and DOING TELEPHONE with the Divines, talking with them like on a phone. He also sat down and unpacked a very very long and huge Chillum, the regional pipe for smoking Charras. It was a wooden pipe and Prem Baba took it and angrily shouted at Buthnath and started to clean this big Chillum.
He took some thing into His hands togehter with tabacco and started "to massage" the mix and with his long fingers together it was a special show. Buthnath talked loud and I understood nothing. We were sitting by the fire, the magic was high levelled and the atmosphere very "oriental" and this for a German tourist.. It was not the first meeting with Prem Baba, some evenings before we visited him at his room and he called me with this croaky voice "German" ... during the smoking ceremony I was sitting there but more and more my straight postion falled down and He said again and again with His loud voice: "German --- SIT !
We just sat there, the Tarzan dressed Prem Baba, the King of ghosts in lady dress and me with a curious lady hat in the wrong position ... Prem Baba finished his "massage", took some red piece from the woodfire and put it on the top of this Chillum and started to sing ... very loud and very long with many many words, the names of Hindu Gods,Then he took a deep inhalation from his chillum and passed it on to Buthnath. Buthnath started again to sing and call to the Gods ... hallo hallo ... the chillum was out, not burning anymore, Prem Baba was angry and He started again with the red burning wooden piece ... Alaak Niranyar ... this is the prayer to the "unseeable light."
I also joined in the smoking ritual. The whole scene had changed into a movie. Prem Baba and Buthnath permanently changed their form, and I recognised all those I knew from the past and had some “stories” with.
wonderful.
